"He needs to share blood, and passion; needs the fight, the conquest, and domination. He needs the strength that comes with the night, and he needs to be a Prime. Perhaps even a mortal woman would be able to bring him through this. One who understands the risks-"

"Not just any mortal woman will do."

There was a long and pregnant silence from Serisa before she said, "Damn. His timing is shit."

"So I have informed him, my love."

"Then we should bring her to him."

"No!" Alec cut into the conversation. His mouth throbbed. He had to talk around the aching fangs that had drawn down to graze his lower lip. "She's too gifted. Too fragile. I will protect her from myself." He glared at Serisa, though his eyes felt like burning coals. "I will protect her from you."

Serisa knelt on the floor in front of him and touched his shoulders lightly with her strong, long-fingered hands. Even though she was not of his Clan, even though she'd angered him, she was still a Matri.
